AC Running But Not Cooling? 8 Causes and Fixes for Minnesota Homes

Few things are more frustrating on a hot July day in Waubun or Mahnomen County than watching your thermostat sit at 82°F while your AC runs non-stop. 1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter (DIY Fix)

A severely restricted filter reduces airflow so dramatically that your AC can't move enough air across the evaporator coil to cool the space. Check your filter first — if it's gray and dense with debris, replace it immediately. This is the most common cause of reduced cooling performance and takes five minutes to fix.

2. Thermostat Set to "Fan On" Instead of "Auto"

If your thermostat fan is set to "On" instead of "Auto," the blower runs continuously — including when the AC isn't actively cooling. This circulates room-temperature air through the house, which feels like the AC isn't working. Check your thermostat settings and switch to "Auto" if needed.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen coil blocks airflow and prevents heat transfer. Symptoms include ice on the refrigerant lines going into the indoor unit and noticeably weaker airflow. Common causes: dirty filter (see #1), low refrigerant, or restricted airflow. Fix: turn the system to fan-only mode for 2–3 hours to defrost. Replace the filter. If it refreezes, call for service.

4. Low Refrigerant Charge

Refrigerant is the substance that carries heat from inside your home to the outdoor unit. Low refrigerant means reduced heat transfer capacity — your AC blows air, but it's not cold enough. Causes include small leaks (refrigerant doesn't deplete naturally). Signs: warm air from vents, ice on the refrigerant line, hissing sounds. Requires a licensed technician — refrigerant handling is federally regulated.

5. Dirty Condenser Coils (Outdoor Unit)

The outdoor condenser coil sheds heat from inside your home to the outdoor air. If it's coated in cottonwood seeds, grass clippings, or dust, it can't shed heat efficiently. Your AC runs longer, works harder, and delivers less cooling. Gently rinse the coil with a garden hose (off to the side, never directly) to remove surface debris annually.

6. Undersized AC for the Space

An AC that's too small for your home's square footage or heat load will run constantly without reaching the setpoint. 7. Failing Capacitor or Contactor

The capacitor starts and runs the compressor and condenser fan motors. A failing capacitor causes the compressor to run weakly or not at all — the fan runs, the indoor unit runs, but the system doesn't actually cool because the compressor isn't operating at full capacity. Symptoms: a clicking sound when the unit tries to start, or the outdoor fan spinning but the unit not cooling. Requires a technician — capacitors hold dangerous electrical charges.

8. Ductwork Leaks

Up to 30% of cooled air can be lost through leaky duct connections before it ever reaches your living space.
