If you have one bedroom that's always cold, a furnace that runs forever on subzero nights, or an air conditioner that can't keep the upstairs comfortable, the problem often isn't the furnace or the AC. It's the ductwork. Ducts are the least-inspected part of most heating and cooling systems, and in the older farmhouses, ranch homes and manufactured homes around Waubun, they're frequently the weakest link.
Common duct problems in Mahnomen County homes
Leaky joints in unheated spaces. Ducts that run through crawl spaces, attics, attached garages or cold basements lose heated air through every unsealed seam. When it's 20 below, that lost heat is going straight outside, and the furnace has to make it up.
Crushed or disconnected flex duct. Flexible duct gets stepped on, buried under blown-in insulation, kinked around framing or pulled loose from a boot. A single collapsed run is the classic cause of the one-cold-room complaint.
Rodent damage. Rural homes near fields and shelterbelts see mice and other rodents chew through duct insulation and flex duct, especially in crawl spaces. Besides the air loss, that can pull contaminated air into the system.
Undersized returns. Many homes around Waubun were built with a single central return, sized for a furnace decades before anyone added central air. Starved return airflow makes the blower work harder, overheats furnace heat exchangers and freezes AC coils.
Add-ons that were never designed. When farmhouses get added onto, and many around here have been several times, the new rooms often get a duct tapped off the end of an existing trunk. The result is rooms that are always too hot or too cold.
Manufactured home crossover ducts. In double-wide homes, the flexible crossover duct under the home connecting the two halves is a common failure point. It sags, tears or disconnects, and half the house goes cold.
How we inspect ductwork
We start by listening to what you've noticed: which rooms, which season, and how long it's been happening. Then we measure. Static pressure testing tells us whether the system is moving the air it should. Temperature readings at supply registers show where heat is getting lost. Then we physically inspect every accessible run in the basement, crawl space, attic and garage, and document what we find with photos. You get a written report with prioritized, priced recommendations. There's no obligation to do any of it.
Duct sealing and repair done right
Cloth duct tape doesn't belong on ductwork. It dries out and falls off, especially with the temperature swings in a Minnesota crawl space or attic. We seal joints with mastic and fiberglass mesh or UL-rated foil tape, reconnect and properly support loose runs, replace crushed and damaged flex with new insulated duct, and insulate runs that pass through unheated space. When the real problem is an undersized return or a poorly designed branch, we fix the design, not just the leak.
Air duct cleaning: when it helps and when it doesn't
Duct cleaning is useful after construction or remodeling dust, after rodent activity in the ducts, when there's visible debris or buildup at the registers, or when you're moving into a home with an unknown history. It won't fix a comfort problem caused by leaks, crushed runs or undersized returns. We'll tell you honestly which one your house needs, and we often combine cleaning with an inspection so you only pay for one trip.
Duct work before a new furnace or AC
If you're planning a new furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, have the ducts looked at first. A new high-efficiency system connected to leaky, undersized ducts won't deliver the comfort or savings you paid for. Every installation we quote includes a duct evaluation. See Furnace Installation & Replacement and AC Installation.

Technician insight
When someone tells me one bedroom is always cold, I head for the crawl space or attic before I touch the furnace. Nine times out of ten there's a flex run crushed under insulation or pulled off its boot, and the fix costs far less than anything on the furnace.
The Always-Cold Bedroom
A typical duct call around Waubun: a 1970s ranch home where the back bedroom never gets warm in winter. In the crawl space, the flex duct feeding that room has been chewed by mice and has pulled loose from its boot, so it's heating the crawl space instead. Replacing the run with properly supported insulated duct and sealing the connections brings the room back to temperature, and the furnace runs less.
