A new furnace is one of the biggest purchases you'll make for your home, and around Waubun it's also a safety decision. The furnace you choose will run thousands of hours every winter for the next 15 to 20 years, through January nights that regularly drop past 20 below. Getting the size, efficiency, venting and ductwork right matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country.
Signs it's time to replace your furnace
- Age. The furnace is 18 to 20 years old or more, especially if it's an older standard-efficiency model with a metal flue.
- A cracked heat exchanger. This is a safety problem, not an efficiency one, and on older furnaces it usually means replacement.
- Repeated repairs. You've paid for several significant repairs in the last couple of winters and it's still unreliable.
- Rising fuel bills. Propane or gas bills keep climbing without an obvious reason.
- Uneven heat. Some rooms never get warm, or the house can't keep up on the coldest nights.
- Parts are gone. The manufacturer no longer makes key parts for your model.
If your furnace just needs a part, see Furnace Repair first. We'll always tell you if repair is the better value.
Sizing: why we never just match the old furnace
The most common furnace installation mistake is sizing the new furnace off the old furnace's label. Plenty of older furnaces around here were oversized from day one, and many homes have since had new windows, insulation or siding that cut the heating load. An oversized furnace short-cycles: it blasts heat, shuts off, and starts again. That wastes fuel, wears out parts and leaves cold spots.
We do a room-by-room load calculation based on your home's actual square footage, insulation, windows, air leakage and our local winter design temperature. That gives us the right size for your house as it is today.
Propane or natural gas
Many homes in Waubun, Naytahwaush, Bejou and the surrounding countryside heat with propane from a tank on the property; others are on natural gas lines. We install furnaces for both, set up the gas valve and orifices for the correct fuel, and verify supply pressure and combustion. With propane prices, efficiency matters. A 96% furnace burns noticeably less fuel than a 20-year-old 80% unit doing the same work.
Efficiency options
High-efficiency condensing furnaces (95%+ AFUE) are the standard choice for most replacements around here. They vent through PVC pipes out the side wall or roof, and the combustion air comes from outside, which is safer and more efficient in a tight, wind-sealed house.
Two-stage and modulating furnaces run on a low setting most of the time and ramp up only when it's truly cold. They're quieter, more even and more efficient, and they're worth considering for larger homes or anyone bothered by temperature swings.
Dual fuel. If you also need a new air conditioner, pairing the furnace with a cold-climate heat pump lets the heat pump handle the mild and moderate days while the furnace covers the deep cold. That can make a real difference in fuel use, especially for Wild Rice Electric members on off-peak rates. See Heat Pump Services.
Venting installed for northwest Minnesota snow
The PVC pipes on a high-efficiency furnace are its most vulnerable point in our winters. Snow drifts, wind-driven snow and frost can block them and lock out the furnace. We place and terminate vents above the typical drift line, away from where snow piles up off the roof, and route the condensate drain so it won't freeze in a cold utility room or crawl space. It's a small detail that prevents a lot of 2am no-heat calls.
Your ducts and your new furnace
A new furnace is only as good as the ductwork it connects to. We check static pressure and inspect the ducts during every estimate. If the return air is undersized, which is common in homes built decades ago, a new high-efficiency furnace can overheat and short-cycle. We'll tell you what needs attention and price it separately so you can decide. See Ductwork Inspection & Repair.
When the furnace dies in the middle of winter
If your furnace fails beyond repair in January, we'll prioritize getting heat back into your home, and we'll give you honest options instead of a pressured decision made at 2am. Call (218) 227-4357 any time.
Rebates and financing
The federal 25C tax credit for high-efficiency furnaces expired for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. Utility rebates may still be available depending on your gas or electric provider, and we'll help you check current programs when you get your estimate.

Technician insight
The biggest mistake I see on furnace replacements isn't the brand. It's PVC vents terminated eight inches off the ground on the north side of the house, where the drifts pile up. The furnace is great; it just can't breathe every time it snows. Vent height and location are part of the install, not an afterthought.
A Typical Farmhouse Furnace Replacement
A common replacement around Waubun: a 1960s farmhouse with a 25-year-old propane furnace rated well above the home's actual heating load, feeding an undersized return in a cold crawl space. The typical solution is a correctly sized 96% two-stage furnace, a rebuilt and insulated return, and PVC vents raised above the drift line. The result is steadier heat, fewer short cycles and a smaller propane bill.
